I just purchased this assembly a couple years ago and the plastic piece at the back that everyone else is talking about is the culprit. I purchased a complete set of Adora appliances at Home Depoy in 2006 and this is part of that set. I love everything about each piece and they are all going strong, but this ice maker replacement. Last time I buy the assembly. Next time I will buy a new fridge. And GE sold their appliance line to a Chinese company anyway, so I am unsure of the quality now with the new ones.

The plastic connection that drives the auger assembly connects to a metal drive unit. That plastic connection fails regularly after a few weeks' use. I'm thoroughly disappointed and have made numerous repair requests. The process to have the parts replaced is painful.

I have had this GE Profile refrigerator (PSS26NSTA SS) for 13 years. The ice maker has not worked properly for that amount of time. While under warranty, I had 3 repairmen attempt to repair it. Each stated that the ice maker is a poor design. The problem begins with the fact that the ice has to travel against gravity (up hill) to reach the dispenser port. The auger does not assist with this process. It merely moves the ice cubes to the sides of the bin where it freezes into a large mass of ice and makes the dispensing impossible. I have replaced (not a simple task) the plastic spool which turns the auger since it broke. Plastic was a poor choice for this part. I chose the GE product because they are made in Louisville. I am fairly pleased with the 13 year performance of the product except for the ice maker.
